The process of testing and dosing a reef system can seem very daunting, especially to the new hobbyist. Our best attempt to mimic the wonders of nature in our own microcosms of a natural reef can seem futile at times. Understanding the importance of elements, such as calcium and magnesium, for the vitality of a complex ecosystem, such as a marine reef aquarium, is crucial to success. While the technology to help us succeed has progressed significantly since I first entered the hobby over 20 years ago, I can't help but ask if some of the most basic tools that are required to assist us in successfully maintaining these systems may have been overlooked?
